Let’s talk about taking long car rides as a mom trying to breastfeed (or pump) on the road.
I’m Katie and I am a lactation consultant and also a breastfeeding and pumping mom. I know this can seem really intimidating, but there’s a lot of tips and tricks here you can use.
Tips for Breastfeeding on a Road Trip
- Prep: When you’re prepping, make sure that you pack multiples of all your different pump parts and bottles just in case, because things do happen and that everything is charged ready to go. Take a car adapter if you can.
- Map it Out: Make sure that you plot out where you can take a break every two to 3 hours. This gives you a chance to feed your baby, get them out of the car seat and take a stretch.
- Portable Pumps: Feeding and pumping is also doable on the go. If you’re thinking about pumping, try a portable or wearable breast pump. The Lansinoh pump is one that I’ve been using lately. It’s been a game changer for long drives.
- Maintain Supply: Remember that if you do plan on offering a bottle instead of breastfeeding, definitely pump during those bottle times so that you’re maintaining your milk supply when you’re storing your milk. Freshly pumped milk can stay out for up to 4 hours, but a cooler with ice is definitely the best move here. They also make insulated thermoses that are designed specifically for chilling breast milk.
- Keep it Clean: When I’m in the car, I like to use clean wipes to quickly and effectively clean pump parts and bottles.
- Hydrate: It’s really, really important to hydrate and pack snacks to take care of yourself.
Have a nice drive, moms.
